This here Greggs vegan roll has been around for a while and I’ve been meaning to try one, to see what all the fuss is about. So is it a load of tasteless junk food or actually quite nice? If you have tried one yourself, am I right with my conclusions?
I got mine from Greggs in Dunstable, pleasantly surprised they had some. Previously they have sold out and once they told me they were selling hundreds every week (wow!). So once I had mine, I found a nice sunlit bench in the pedestrian shopping area and scoffed it. Here’s a summary:
- the pastry was much better than I expected. Dry, quite light and did a good job in holding everything together. Actually I was half expecting a soggy, fatty gooey mess and therefore pleasantly surprised
- the contents were a bit stodgy. At first it tasted like stuffing, as in roast dinner stuffing. It had a little seasoning and the creators had clearly gone to some lengths to try and create a sausage substitute
- costing £1.00 I guessed the price was probably right. Any less would have you wondering why it was so cheap, what was wrong with it and so on. Anymore would have been a rip off.
Afterwards, it was a different story….
- I felt quite full. The stuffing-like filling had me stuffed and a bit uncomfortable
- I wondered if I should have had something to drink and wash it down as I was feeling very “solid” and began to feel thirsty
- the “after taste” has lasted for several hours, a salty flavoured after taste, definitely not to my liking
- it didn’t seem a healthy option at all and this goes against what people expect vegan food to be
So, who is it for?
- wannabe vegans who can’t do without an imitation sausage roll
- vegans who need some lunch time food; vegan food is not always readily available
- bland, grey suited MPs and skint civil servants who like to try and do the right thing
Like you, I was surprised to see it advertised as available on a placard outside the Greggs in our local market town. Like you, I did consider trying one too- purely in the interests of scientific research. I didn’t, but am truly glad that you did instead; now my curiosity is satisfied and I haven’t had to eat one to find out. Thank you.
Thanks Careerisover, glad to have saved you the trouble!
