In spite of being fairly thrifty and having a reasonable view of our expenditure, I seem to have missed the price of having a haircut where Poppy the dog is concerned. Today this came to a head as I had my own haircut (but not by the dog groomer)…..
”How would you like your hair cut Sir?”
”If you can take off about three months’ worth, that would be about right”
And so the hairdresser went about snipping away. We went through the usual conversation of “did you have a nice Christmas?” followed by “is it back to work on Monday? …..Oh you’re young to be retired, you must have been in the Police or Fire and Rescue?”
I duly paid £10 for my haircut. If indeed I do have my haircut once every 3 months, that works out at £40 a year. That’s quite enough, thank you.
Now compare this with Rachel. Rachel, it has to be said, has never been one to spend much on herself. Never spending oooodles of money on the latest fashions, makeup or hairdo’s. Her hairdresser charges £20 every six weeks. As Rachel correctly points out, women have always had to pay more for their haircuts. Always, that’s just how it works. That’s okay, I can swallow that.
Poppy the dog, on the other hand, is now on my radar for thriftiness. She costs us £30 every six weeks – roughly £240 a year against my £40. And she’s a DOG!!!
So how can we economise on the dog having so many expensive haircuts? Apparently, we are told, we are getting a bargain; lots of people have to pay far more. Plus she gets washed, blow dried and some smelly poofy powder shaken all over her (so much, we can smell it for days afterwards).
Should we:
- Do it ourselves?
- Find someone else who is cheaper?
- Lengthen the time between buts? After all, I go three months between my haircuts.
- Any other suggestions?
Sensible(!) suggestions below please.
