Weekly update – a challenging week

So much has happened this last week and my blog, for me, is a nice way of capturing what’s happening.  I’m sure you’ll know, I don’t blog about everything or somethings might be a bit sanitised.
I do feel for Rachel and Hannah right now.  Their little fluffy dog, Poppy, had become ill over the last couple of weeks and this necessitated a number of visits to the vet.  The vet suggested the kindest thing would be to put her to sleep and so after a couple of days, this was done.  I feel sad for Rachel and Hannah especially as they miss that little fluffy dog so much.

I have joined the gym!  Well, our local leisure centre to be more precise.  The aim is to improve my fitness and gyms have worked quite well for me before.  I’ll probably do a separate review of my experience, I have quite a bit to say already!

For now, I have had a Boditrax scan where all kinds of clever measurements are taken; all I had to do was stand on some sensors and hold some handles.  Overall I appear to be in the ‘Standard Optimal’ group, so I guess I’m a Mr Average (not sure I always like being Mr Average…..).  This is okay, I’m thankful but I can still improve my health through exercise.

I am unsure of the measurement about my bones from the Boditrax viewpoint. I’m wondering what to make of this (if you know, please leave a comment below).  Perhaps doing more in the gym will change these readings and that’s the nice thing about Boditrax as it tracks changes over a period of time.

We are behind with our social life, with quite a few people on our list to spend time with.  It is surprisingly busy, this life of so-called retirement.  I feel as if I don’t have much time for myself, so little time for drawing, blogging, sorting the garage or even a little daydreaming.  Striking the right balance seems very elusive at times!  It was nice, however, to have a meal with our friends Val and Maya where we were treated to their Bulgarian cuisine.

Another positive, as I do like to cling onto these, has been buying my air ticket to California in May.  Although I’m there for 16 days, I have wondered if I should aim to be there a little longer but I don’t want to overstay my welcome or be away from Rachel too long, so I’ll stick with that.  Although it’s a few months away, I’m still getting excited and, in a funny kind of way, I think I’m going to enjoy the journey having booked a window seat for maximum daydreaming!

On Friday I had an appointment in Urology at the hospital.  I had thought I would simply be discharged at long last, on the basis of things being as good as they’ll ever get.  Instead the consultant was concerned to know that I’m on my third course of antibiotics since the start of the year as I try to shift this latest urinary tract infection.  So I’m still on their books for now.

Part of the problem is my kidneys are rather slow at producing urine, so it isn’t so easy to flush any bugs through.  Just as well we are well stocked up on cranberry juice!

We went to the Parkrun at Wendover Woods yesterday.  It’s hilly, although the first half is downhill and this means as soon as you’re feeling slightly knackered, you turn a corner and realise you’re at the bottom of a mile long hill.  I had to walk some of the hill, though I wasn’t the only one.

In the end I finished ‘mid pack’ and a smidgen over 30 minutes.  Slow for me but then it was a challenging course.  I said to my friend Rosie “I’m going back in a couple of months to see if I can improve that time”.

So all in all, a mixed week but we have plenty of things to look forward to.
