We are already missing our home and both of us feel unsettled in a kind of limbo. We are, gradually, settling into Life at Toddington and looking after my mother-in-law. Here’s a few things I really miss:
- Proper cooking – here we have two microwave ovens and a toaster. One is ancient but efficient. The other (being adapted for the blind) talks to you in a deep, bossy voice. We are having a hob and oven fitted soon, all being well.
- Our back garden – it’s delightful at the moment. Rachel and Hannah both spent so much time planting and nurturing new flowering plants for the summer. I like sitting in our dining room and enjoy the looking out on the array of colours, trees and everything.
- Wifi. We have none. We have placed an order with Virgin media and it should come in 10 days.
- Creature comforts – we aren’t extravagant at all but I do miss the little niceties. Here we live in an austere house where everything is functional, old and dusty.
- Having friends come around; either by arrangement or just dropping in
Things I do like:
- Living in a spacious house
- All the character of wooden timber beams, low ceilings, high ceilings, lots of nooks and crannies
- A sense of home making
- Village life, so far. I like the spaciousness with a lower density of population. Everyone is so friendly around here.
- Looking after Grandma. Even with her occasional rudeness, gruffness and lack of gratitude. It teaches us about grace, reminds us of why this is right to do
- The sense of starting something new. Nothing we sought, it just happened.
