There seem to be so many niggles with the Dusty Museum, our new home, it almost feels as if things are falling apart around us. So many things need repair, so many things held together with a wing and a prayer and have needed attention even in the short time we have been here.
The above photo is of a cracked ceiling. Our bedroom ceiling. My side of the bed ceiling. And when I lie there in the morning, staring up at the crack, I try to reassure myself it hasn’t got any bigger.
Meanwhile, here’s a little list of other things which have challenged us since we took up residence in the Dusty Museum.
- washing machine – leak repaired twice having flooded the laundry
- wood burning stove – smoke leaking, needed re-cementing
- roof is leaky – on going issue, depends on which way the wind blows. In an attic room (not the one over our bedroom) there is a little cupboard and in there is a roof beam which drips water when it rains outside, but only if the wind blows in the wrong direction. I have a saucepan in there to collect the rainwater.
- the freezer – door seal not very good, a little noisy. It was bought in 1989 and so it’s done quite well
- the bathroom tiles need re-grouting
- the shower has gone wrong – new one on order. Again, a rather elderly appliance at about 30 years old and must have been one of the early power showers. Astonishingly it is still available, sort of, the plumber is having difficulty obtaining one
- water leak on upstairs toilet – downstairs toilet ceiling soaked. Leak fixed. Ceiling still needs fixing
- accidentally broke a glass wall light. My fault, being clumsy while decorating the room
- various electrical issues. Happily we have our friend Val who comes and fixes things
- double glazed windows have blown x3. Luckily our friend Nathan comes to the rescue
- original Victorian windows are drafty, really thin glass
- arm chair needs repair underneath. In fact the webbing has torn completely
- possible gas leak in rear garage. I’m sure I can get a wifi of gas there sometimes, just as well it’s quite large and airy
- door sensor alarm drove us nuts – now disconnected. Just as well really, they were poised to be thrown into the wheelie bin
- some radiators only getting lukewarm – solved by speeding up the pump and insulating 20 metres of pipes. Still a bit chilly.
You can be assured, there is absolutely no chance of ever being bored here!
