“You never know when you might need a 1955 calendar” says Rachel “especially when the days line up with 2022”. As you might guess, the decluttering continues….
It is almost worth it, putting the 1955 calendar on show and in use here in the Quirky Museum. And as an added bonus we can even try out some of the recipes as the Syllabus caught my eye? Perhaps not, as it is unlikely that we have a gill of brandy lying around.
You might think I am being nerdy over this now. Last year, my paper diary was an old 1982 medical diary with various anatomical drawings and the days lined up exactly with 2021. It doesn’t stop there as a couple of years ago we were using a promotional diary from our financial advisors and naturally it was the wrong year with the correct dates. The financial advisor couldn’t believe it when I told him. Mind you, he’s more used to dealing with clients who have several million to invest and we are their undisputed poorest clients – especially with the proof of using old calendars and diaries!
Decluttering has many positive things going for it. We are passing things on that we no longer need and will benefit someone else. For some items, we might even raise some cash. It was exactly that when the latest piece of furniture went, a Meredew dressing table. We only have one more piece of this trendy, mid 20th century furniture to find a new home for. The person who bought it was a dealer, although it has to be said, he paid a very fair price with only a half-hearted attempt at haggling.
He was a really interesting person; in normal times I would have invited him in for a coffee and a chat. Turns out he’s a blues musician but has turned to dealing in retro/vintage furniture owing to Covid. In the brief chat we had, he was fascinating and very likeable indeed. I am hoping he might pay us another visit.
This all brings me to the point of itching to get back into normal life. As I write this we see Omicron cases fall as quickly as they rose and I hope we can creep out a bit more before too long. I miss being sociable, having friends around for coffee in the morning or a bite to eat in the evening. I miss going to the gym, church getting together with people.
Yesterday I was chatting to a friend who’s a hospital consultant. He had recently had a dose of Covid himself and we reflected on it. He said it was almost inevitable we would all be exposed to Covid at some point and everyone is hoping the virus will simply fizzle out. Let’s all hope the fizzling is in a relatively harmless way!
Meanwhile Rachel has acquired a new pet. Sourdough, to be precise. It needs looking after, it needs the right temperature and attention, not to mention “feeding”. Thankfully she hasn’t started talking to the sourdough….!
