An eventful return to work

Escape plan into action….

Today I had quite an eventful return to work.  It seemed ages since I was last there and I almost managed to completely forget my computer password.  I thought the welcome for me was, to be honest, a little subdued and I asked to see my manager, partly as a back-to-work interview and also to tell her of my intentions (i.e. resigning).

At work we are coming towards the concluding stages of a team review.  Actually this is a very positive review and one which will hopefully see a number of exciting developments for the team.  Knowing my application for flexible retirement was already in the melting pot, I asked if it would make things easier if I resigned, rather than breaking my job up to fit flexible retirement.  The reply was along the lines of “yes” it would and it would be helpful to know as soon as possible.

So this evening I have written my resignation letter!!!!!!!

At home we have gone over the whole escape plan again.  Can we afford it?  What happens when one of us dies and is the survivor adequately covered? Have we missed anything?  Check, check, check.  We reminded ourselves this is too good to miss.  We would much rather live our lives modestly rather than slog our guts out for a maximum public sector, final salary pension only to drop dead before we get a chance to enjoy our retirement.

And after work….

I took some flexi time and went back to the hospital for some blood samples to be taken, ahead of my appointment on Monday with the kidney consultant.  When I got to the blood testing department, I handed in my form which indicated which blood tests were required.  The receptionist couldn’t quite read an abbreviation which the consultant had scrawled.

“Is that meant to read PSA or PSR? Honestly these Doctors and their awful  ‘andwriting”

“It could be PSA as that’s to do with my prostate, is there a PSR test?” I replied

“I dunno.  I’ll tell ya what darling, see if you can provide a wee wee sample” and then went onto explain about peeing into this pot and then transferring into that syringe and so on.

So I went into the grotty toilet and provided said sample.  Back to the waiting room and was almost immediately called to give my blood sample.  It was confirmed the results would be back in time for my appointment on Monday.

As I drove home, I was grinning like a Cheshire cat.  I knew I was going to quit my job tomorrow!
