My pre operative assessment

Pre operative assessmentI forgot to mention I had my pre operative assessment last week, all okay.  Actually it was quite funny with the staff playing “guess his BMI, blood pressure and so on”.

The pre operative assessment is to ensure I’m fit enough for surgery, I think this is with the anaesthetic in mind but I’m not completely sure.  The assessment was carried out by a trainee under supervision. These two were trying to outwit each other by assuming they could tell what my vital measurements were.

Mind you, they weren’t being too kind when one said “his BMI is gonna be a good 25”.  It was then measured through weighing me, measuring my height and plotting this on a table.

”You got it wrong, according to this he’s 22, not 25 so I’m putting that down on his form”.  I should think so too!

Next came my blood pressure with one saying “I reckon he’s a 120 over 80 kind of bloke, he looks it”.  Well they measured me and I was a LOT higher and I said it normally is these days, plus the scary effect of being in hospital.

I was measured with all kinds of other things.  Blood, compression sock size, breathing, ECG, urine and so on.  I was passed to another nurse who declared me fit.

I needed to have some further blood tests, not quite sure why and I’ve already had these done.  So all being well everything is now set for my surgery tomorrow.  After the biopsies taken in September under general anaesthetic I now have a good idea of the process and what it will feel like quickly drifting off to sleep and then waking up in a different place once it has all been done. I am really looking forward to this, in a weird kind of way.  I see it as a step forward, to take a step much closer to being done with all of this catheter business.  As I have already suggested there is a question mark over how things will be after things have settled down, we will just have to wait and see.

Perhaps only small points (but really important to me) once this catheter stuff is no longer needed, I’m really looking forward to a few things….

  • feeling free once again
  • being able to ride my bike again after 6+ months
  • being able to run without feeling sore and being restricted to 30-45 minutes
  • building those distances up once again, I’d like to do a half marathon in a couple of months
  • getting my act together and joining Dunstable Runners.  I know a couple of runners there and I think sounds fun and it’ll do me good.  Besides, I wonder if I could train as a coach one day?
