Snappy dressing in retirement

Jeans and bamboo socks – great retirement clothing

One of the first things I did when I retired last year was to discard all my work clothes.  I did that with complete glee!  Now I’m settling into retired life a little more, perhaps I ought to consider what to wear and some snappy dressing in retirement.

Perhaps it is the rebel inside me that wants to wear some nice old jeans all the time; surely no one is ever too old to wear a nice pair of lived-in jeans?  Within days of retiring and packing all my work clothes away, I went out and got some more clothes that I felt more comfortable in.

They say our clothes reflect our personalities.  What’s mine, how do I express this in retirement?  Perhaps I need to dress like an art student and dye my air?  Perhaps I might be better suited to be an outdoorsy type and buy some Goretex?  Perhaps I might be a rebel and get a tongue piercing?  Maybe I ought to be more sporty and invest in some more Lycra?

The serious side is that I need to consider my retirement clothing carefully.  Our clothing budget is pared right down and charity shops might look increasingly attractive.  For me it’s also important to think about sustainability (hey that’s making a statement) which includes buying clothes from responsible sources where good, ethical trading takes place and wherever possible clothes are more plant based.

And another aspect is me making clothes last a long time.  In fact the longer I have a jacket, a pair of jeans etc the more I like it.  I have a Landsend fleece which I have had for well over 10 years.  I have worn it thousands of times and it is still going strong.  Each year I like it all the more even though people must be so bored of me wearing it!

So I’m still trying to sort out my “retired” look, I’m always open to suggestions from those who know about these things!
