The trouble with coffee

A straight forward coffee, no pretentious twaddle
A straight forward coffee, no pretentious twaddle

I do like nice coffee but it’s not always straight forward these days.  Perhaps like life itself, it can become a little complicated and I’m just trying to keep things in perspective, although I can’t help having a rant.

The main trouble with coffee these days is the pretentious waffle that seems to go with it.  Take, for example, the current Taylors of Harrogate coffee we have in use at the moment.  It is a perfectly nice coffee and yet the pack describes it as “a crisp roast with mellow flavours of hazelnut and toffee”.  I don’t detect any hazelnut or toffee flavours there at all.

And yet this is quite a tame description.  Even bargain basement Aldi have jumped on the bandwagon with their ground decaf coffee by describing “a delicious medium roasted blend that uses rich smoky flavours mixed with nutty notes and delicate caramels to deliver a distinctly buttery mouthfeel with pleasant malty notes”.

All of this is complete rubbish and twaddle.

As I said, I do like nice coffee.  I’m not an unsophisticated heathen who enjoys the cheap instant coffee.  Far from it and yet I’m not a coffee snob either.  I have had some lovely coffees in my time including some samples which I have reviewed on another blog, so I don’t want to put people off from sending me sample to reviews; it’s just I tell it like it is – honestly in a down to earth way.  That’s not a down to earthy, blueberry undertone kind of way either!

I feel better now!
