While driving earlier today, I heard the radio presenter ask “if you could have one thing…. what would it be?”
This is quite a thought provoking question. Most people it seems, answered by “being happy”. Is there more to this?
Yes! While most folk said they would like to be happy, some said they’d like more money. Some mentioned health, love and a handful of other things. The most common answer though, was wanting to be happy.
All these are fair enough, they’re good things to aspire to and who wouldn’t?
And then I thought to myself “but I am happy” followed by “I already have enough money, not too much, just enough and I feel very contented”.
This continued to run through my home as I got home. I switched off the engine, turned the radio off (which had returned to broadcasting the usual drivel by now) and sat there for a moment. I decided a little wisdom would be my choice. Yes, wisdom.
Just imagine, what being very wise would be like. What you could do, how you can benefit others, the insight you would have.
In Proverbs, there’s quite a bit about wisdom and, as I like reading this part of the Bible on my own when I’m troubled by something, I have found myself in there again. The verse which stands out is:
”The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. For through wisdom your days will be many and years will be added to your life. If you are wise, your wisdom will reward you; if you are a mocker, you alone will suffer”
The above is from Proverbs 8 verses 10 to 12.
I also see that passage as a challenge for me. While I don’t necessarily mock people, I can be critical. In my “critical sights” have been the likes of Boris Johnson and my MP who seems to blindly support him. Perhaps I ought to reconsider my stance here?
Nevertheless, if I could have anything, it would be to seek and gain a little wisdom.
How about you?
