The joy of a technology-free run

This morning I went for a run with Hannah and I forgot to turn Strava on.  Strava, by the way, is a GPS app which tracks your mileage, route and pace.  Initially disappointed, I’m now thinking it’s not a bad thing to do from time to time.  This is really about the joy of a technology-free run!

It was nice this morning and also unexpected.  Before breakfast I was just heading out down the drive when I heard a window open and “wait for me Dad”.

A few minutes later Hannah and I were off for a 3 mile run.  The pace was a little more gentle compared to when I run on my own.  A few times I would just sprint ahead to a tree or something to raise my heart rate – it felt so good!  Hannah would simply keep up her own pace as she then caught me up as I panted on the side of the path.  Perhaps a case of the hare and tortoise?  Whichever, it was good to raise my heart rate up for a few quick blasts.

And then there is the state of my running shoes.  I had suspected for a while they needed replacing and on closer inspection, they certainly do!  I do have a second pair, also well used but it doesn’t hide the fact I need to splash the cash and get some more.

Having two pairs of running shoes is sensible for the regular runner.  It means you always have a dry pair to use, perhaps even a clean pair too!  Of course it does mean they last twice as long, so not really too extravagant after all.

So yeah, it was so nice running with Hannah.  So nice not having to worry about Strava telling me my pace was down and so on.  So nice being reminded of running being a simple, down to earth sport; just a pair of running shoes, that’s all you really need.  Who cares?

Most importantly, I was out running with Hannah.

Thank you Hannah x
