The skip scavengers

Every now and then we have a splurge on a cluttered area of our home.  The attic, the spare room, the garage and so on.  It is the garage which has come under the spotlight lately, although with the skip scavengers at work….

Seems there are lots of skips appearing on driveways in our neighbourhood.

“Crickey” I thought “I reckoned our horde of clutter was bad, but never enough to justify a skip”

We stroll around the neighbourhood during the lovely long evenings we are all enjoying.  We wallow in the delightful weather, we quietly celebrate our freedom within the confines of the Lockdown and we cautiously navigate around parked cars while others politely pass by.

I instinctively detect when a skip has caught Rachel’s eye.  It might be on the other side of the road and yet there are things in there which “could be useful”.

She spotted a door on the top of a skip and knowing we needed a new door for the side of our garage, immediately came home and grabbed a tape measure.

“Hey Doug, that door would fit” she says in a worryingly enthusiastic way, followed by “let’s go and get it!”

I dutifully followed.  Actually it was  just a few doors along from us, so it was nice to introduce ourselves to our new neighbours.  A man called Rob and his wife had moved in, complete with his mother-in-law which meant they were having various adaptations made to their new home.  We chatted and he said we were welcome to help ourselves to the door.

Although an internal door, it is super-heavy.  Even before I could measure up the three necessary hinges, it has been undercoated and I now know my next DIY job is lined up.

Mind you, I’m not sure of the developing colour scheme in the garage’s make-over.  Personally lilac pink and white aren’t my first choice for a garage colour scheme; come to think of it, why on Earth would you have a colour scheme in a garage in the first place?  And matching window blinds?  Perhaps if it was a centrally heated affair to keep a red Ferrari cosseted in there, you might want to have a few contrasting blue accents but not in our garage.

Our garage is, after all, a bit of a dumping area and a place to keep the freezer, the bicycles and the work bench.  At least with it being colour coordinated, it might encourage us to be tidier but I do draw the line at ever having pink window blinds!
