Bud

Has this happened to you at all, being called Bud?  Some pondering here into this latest term to work its way into village parlance.

I didn’t pay much attention to being called Bud when I was buying some wood earlier this year.  I assumed it was short for Buddy and took it as a kind of friendliness.

Next was being called Bud a few times in the village last week.  There was Dave, the friendly (if slightly overpriced) fruit and veg man saying Bud to almost everything.

“Do you have any oranges?”

“Yes Bud, over here.  They’re 30 pence each, Bud.  How many would you like Bud?  They do taste nice, nice and juicy”

So after a couple more encounters, all of the chirpy and enthusiastic variety, I wondered what was going on.  My guess was Bud was simply short for Buddy and this was a friendly gesture, almost certainly a social climb down from Sir.

Have I gone down in life’s pecking order, perhaps I stepped on a snake instead of a ladder and have been demoted? Perhaps it’s the effect of my new rebellious appearance?  Either way I needed to explore this new terminology that had come my way.

According to Google and the Cyberdefinitions website, Bud can indeed have a few different meanings.  They do indeed mention Bud as being a term for a friend, typically used on social media.  I am feeling on fairly safe ground with this.

The alternatives did, however, cause my eyebrows to subconsciously raise themselves somewhat.  It turns out that Bud can also refer to cannabis and this made me smile as my eyebrows had their exercise.  I used to know all of the slang names for drugs and I managed to keep up with the continous evolution of that shady language.  I know I have been left behind with this, many years ago.

The other terms for Bud include a clitoris (now that was news to me) and also for Budweiser, the beer and how that should have occurred to me instantly.  But then again, maybe not as I don’t drink beer.

All of these alternatives are mostly used by teenagers and young adults and have various degrees of guess-ability, so maybe not all is lost.

At least I can be fairly sure which variety of Bud was applied to me.  Thanks for reading, Bud.
