Greggs coffee review

There are times when you simply need a caffeine boost.  If it comes as a really nice coffee, so much the better.  However, that’s not quite what I got on yesterday’s 200 mile drive home.

I had made it most of the way home.  A303, M5, M4 and with the M25 and M1 still to go.  It was approaching the M4 Reading Services that I decided I needed to ‘stretch my legs’…. and we all know what that means.  That’s right, making room for a cup of coffee, to perk me up for the remaining miles.

As a change from the ubiquitous Starbucks and Costa, which always seem terribly expensive, I thought I’d give the Greggs version a try.  At £1.95 for a cup of Americano caffeine it seemed comparatively good value.

Served up with a chirpy dose of cheerfulness in no time at all, I took it back to the car to cool down, ready for drinking.  First sip, not what I had quite expected.  I was sure we had the conversation about serving it with some milk (I never say “white coffee” because it isn’t and I certainly don’t want to ever get drawn into a racist coffee convo).

I drove off and by the time it had cooled, I had another sip and I can tell you, I nearly sprayed it over the windscreen and dashboard – it was horrible!  I took another sip, the tiniest of sips, just to make sure and this was equally horrid.

So I steeled myself and determinedly perked myself up as I took on the M25 without any caffeine making me ultra alert to the motorway’s crazy drivers.  Yet again it tended to be the Range Rover drivers with their arrogant sense of entitlement which spooked me as they drove up close behind and their headlights illuminated the entire inside of the car.  they weaved in and out of the flowing cars and then slamming on their brakes every time they spotted a speed camera.  RR drivers please remember, if I become Chancellor of the Exchequer for the day, you will be paying a very, very price for your menacing vehicle.

I digress.  The coffee was horrid.  Here’s my summary:

The good points

  • Cheaper than Starbucks or Costa (£1.95 verses £3.25)
  • A welcome challenge to Starbucks and Costa
  • Clams to be Fair Trade, so that’s good

The not-so-good points

  • Absolutely horrid taste
  • The cup cannot be recycled (unless you hand it in at a coffee shop or recycling centre, it says)
  • £1.95 wasted and I didn’t get my caffeine!

Suitable for

  • Washing a vindaloo down

  1. You are obviously on something. Gregg’s coffee is highly classed in multiple reviews. Google it. Your one is only negative. Maybe get your caffeine fix up your derier to awaken you senses

  2. I stopped at Greggs M1 Nottingham and had the Greggs coffee with my Tuna and cucumber sarky, the coffee was the disgusting and they should be prosecuted under trades description. It went in the bin
